Customer Review:

1: Simultaneously fun and thought-provoking

This strong debut novel from Patricia Wood has an engaging protagonist who soon reveals to us that being a good and noble person has nothing to do with one's IQ. While this character is not retarded, he is "slow" - but by the end of the book we're left wondering just what is so good about being "fast." An excellent combination of feel-good and thought-provoking, LOTTERY is definitely a winner.

2: Fantastic, Simply Fantastic!!!!!!!
This book is sooo cool! Humor, heartfelt emotion, and even a bit of irritation (I wanted to jump in the CD slap two of the characters) YOU WILL LOVE IT, I PROMISE! It is my commuter book. I pop in the Audio CD, and listen on the way to work. When Its finished, I listen to it again. I know how it ends and still, I want to hear it again and again! A must read/listen!!!!!

3: Jackpot!
This is a wonderful story, the best I have read in a long time. I can recommend it almost without reservation. The author, in her first published novel, speaks in the first person for a young man with an IQ of 76 who wins the lottery. That is not the type of story that I would normally read. Luckily my wife convinced me to read it anyway.

Wood makes Perry L Crandall believable, sympathetic, and funny. This is a delicate balance, but she never strikes a false note. I began rooting for Perry, and desperately hoping that he wouldn't get hoodwinked by his greedy family. I enjoyed his observations about the world, which are wise in an amusing and affecting way. I was laughing out loud throughout. The ending has an unusual twist, but the story is not about the action. It is about love. As the quote in the epilogue says, "Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius." Amen to that.

The story contains some sexual content and coarse language that would not be appropriate for young readers.

4: Hooray for Hollywood...
Deliberately endearing. Why would a book like this even be written? It was absolutely formulaic in it's "Forest Gump"-ness. Let's get inside the mind of a mentally challenged man - a grandma who spits out Tourette-like wisdom; the conniving family; the friend who's a loner and has a dark past; the challenges and obstacles to be faced and overcame - and that little bit o' wisdom that comes twisting out of the main character. This book is designed to be a PFD - personal flotation device - it was made this way on purpose and offers nothing up to the reader. It's bang ready for TV -- or the big screen.

5: I loved "Lottery"!
I loved the book, "Lottery" by Patricia Wood. I also felt compelled to write to the author and tell her that I loved it! She answered me right back. I am so psyched!
I can't wait for her next book. I can definitely see it as a movie-on the big screen--and she said it may be happening.
Perry reminds me of a friend of the family who we have known for 40 years or so. He befriended my dad and my dad, just like Keith, has watched over him. Our friend, like Perry L. Crandall is generous, would give away his lottery and has in fact, "shared" his inheritance with so many people. When his parents died, he was immediately taken advantage of by strangers and family! This book is so true to life.
I loved Gram in the book, as she reminds me of my own Gram. She looks after Perry and teaches him things he needs to know for everyday life. He remembers and repeats in his head all the things she taught him. I love that he writes down several words a day to learn their meanings. I love how the author has Perry describe words that seem to help us see things better.
I read this also in just a few days. Couldn't put it down. You will love this book, too.
P.S. For the person who called it "choppy writing" it is because she is writing it as a mentally challenged person may think or talk, I believe. It made it that much more believable! Buy this book, you won't be sorry!
