1: Seeing Paris through the eyes of Robert Doisneau.
"The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street"--Robert Doisneau.

French photographer Robert Doisneau (1912-1994)) knew Paris. It was arguably his favorite photographic subject. Influenced by the work of Atget and Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau's photographs are a rare experience in truly seeing the world, whether it's a simple reflection in a puddle of water, children at play in the rue de Rivoli, accordionists, cyclists beneath the Eiffel Tower, or the beauty in a lovers' kiss depicted in his most famous photograph, "Le baiser de l'h??tel de ville." He was a master at capturing the significance of his subject in his work, as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression: the "decisive moment," as Cartier-Bresson called it. Doisneau was nothing short of a genius in his rare ability to capture the beauty of Paris and the charm of its inhabitants in Parisian streets and cafes. His photos are poetic, iconic, and indelible. Drawn from 50 years of photographs, the 600 black and white photographs of this definitive collection offer a rare experience in seeing Paris through the eyes of someone who loved his subject well, Robert Doisneau. I have this book on my coffee table.

2: His work is great, too bad the production of this book doesn't match
A nice book book with fascinating photos of old Paris. It's just ashame the design and printing quality are not up the standards of the images. Still, it's better than nothing.

3: A massive book! with not much culling...
Robert Doisneau is one of my childhood favorite photographers. The kiss in front of the cafe on a busy Paris street has always captivated my imagination, even after the scandal over the fact that it was staged. A photographer is as much a catcher of images as a maker of them, so the whole issue of authenticity really didn't bother me too much. So I embraced this massive book with much expectation.. I had seen little of the rest of his work, so it was to be a learning experience. Overall I came out of the book rather disappointed.. Certainly his opus was huge, and this was just a book on his Paris photos, Yet I was a bit disappointed in the mediocrity of much of the work presented. In order to present all his work, some items seems to have been included that were perhaps better off left out. Still, it is an interesting journey into the Paris of old, and though the dated layout is a bit mediocre, I still give it 3 stars.

4: Doisneau's Paris Riveting
Robert Doisneau focuses his camera on the people of Paris capturing moments of curiosity, love, joy, as well as boredom. People are the actors in his camera dramarama. Even the famous stars of France were snapped by Doisneau simply as people in motion.
I found the Paris in Upheaval section -- during the German occupation -- fascinating. Men and women used assumed names and dispatched underground news fighting for the liberation of Paris in cellars and back rooms.
This is not a book you just flip through. I highly recommend it as a genius photographer's trip back to the heart of Paris in the 20s, 30s and 40s.

5: Robert Doisneau's Paris
This is an outstanding compilation of pictures of Paris somewhat like I remember in the last 50 years.

I love black & white photography and he excelled at it.
