Customer Review:

1: Excellent book
Excellent book, especially for Glen Cooks fans. I purchased this and "Passage at Arms" because I am a Glen Cook fan. While it is a big shift from the "Black Company" or "Garrett, P.I." books, it nonetheless holds to Glen Cooks distinctive writing style, almost giving you a feel like you are there, that pulls you into the story. The levels of political intrigue are intricate and on multiple levels. All in all the book is a good read, but I did not enjoy it as much as the "Black Company" or "Garrett, P.I." But I will definitely be reading it again. An enjoyable book.

2: Five, with minor caveats
An excellent book, among Cook's most innovative. It needed more stringent editing, as occasionally characters change gender in the middle of a conversational exchange, and antecedents can be unclear. None of which mars the the book as an outstanding read, an unusual space opera variant. It's not at all like his Garrett Files and Black Company books.

A sequel would be nice someday...

3: Excellent space opera - Spoiler free
I'll start this review like I do all my reviews for Glen Cook's writing... As with most of his books, you're dropped right in the middle and it's sometimes a little confusing at the start. Once you get your feet wet, it's a fantastic ride. One more thing on Cook's style before I get to the book itself... he doesn't waste words. I've ready plenty of authorss that you can skip paragraphs and not miss a beat. Not so with Cook's work.

On to the book... Humans have long ruled a vast area of space called Cannon. Aliens, Others (clones), and artifacts (creatures created for a specific purpose. The character Midnight, for example, is an artifact specializing in the erotic). Cannon's worlds are esentially run by the 10 major merchantile houses. It's the Guardships, however, are the power that keep the merchants in comtrol and hostile aliens both inside and outside of Cannon at bay. Guardships have ruled space for 4,000 years and are believed to be undefeatable....

The story revolves around many characters and plot lines, several revolving around the destruction of the Guardships. Characters range from aliens, Merchantile house members, and Guardship personnel (both officers and soldiers).

What I love about nearly all of Cook's books is this - there are no truly good or evil characters. While some characters are more "good" and some are more "evil", none are pigeon-holed into absolutes and an interesting quandry presents itself to the main protagonist - will the regime vying to replace the Guardships be any better?

All in all, this is an excellent read that gets better and better as you get deeper into the book.

4: An interesting and innovative story and style
I thought Glen Cook's "The Dragon Never Sleeps" an interesting, imaginative story that presents Cook's creative energectic style. I read the entire book but did not enjoy it as much I have enjoyed other books as the focus is on the plot and circumstances not as much on characters and their development.

5: War in space
Glen cook is a masterful author in the SF / Fantasy war genre. This book is perhaps the best SF book he has ever written. It has everything that a hard SF reader will love from an exploration of biomedical ethics to a stab at the question of what truly makes us human. Those who like battles in space will be reminded of the battles in "Enders Game" but with Glen Cook's characteristic grit. There are also plenty of face to face conflicts for a more tactile feeling of death.
