Customer Review:

1: Light and clean
I think "The Grand Sophy" is an excellent recommendation to fans of Jane Austen and regency romance, especially those who are quite sick of contemporary versions of the genre filled with throbbing members and heaving bosoms.

This book is very clean, light and reminiscent of Austen's masterpieces in its humor and focus on domestic issues - marriage, unwanted engagements, cheating husbands, gambling debts and such. The language is sophisticated, the characters are well drawn and likable, and the romance, infused with funny flirtatious banter, is quite compelling. If I have to compare Heyer and Austen, however, Austen wins without a doubt. Her observations of the society are much deeper, her characters are much better developed, her wit is superior.

While "The Grand Sophy" is a very entertaining story, it drags in places, sometimes gets repetitive when the same events are recanted to several people, and the ending is a little hectic, too much goes on simultaneously to enjoy the final love confessions.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book, would recommend it to those looking for Jane Austen substitutes (instead of those horrid zombie parodies and sequels) and will probably read Heyer in future.

P.S. I saw some reviews accusing this book of being anti-Semitic. That's a huge stretch IMO.

2: The grandest Georgette
I've enjoyed almost every Georgette Heyer book and Sophy is my favorite. It has great pacing, interesting plot twists, and fun characters. Best of all the book has the bright and delightful dialogue for which Heyer is famous. I've probably read this book at least five times if not more.

Is it deep or philosophical? Of course not. This is a book to cheer when things seem hard. It does so Grandly. The romance seems more of a by-product of character interactions than absolutely the plot's center. Eccentric characters, witty interactions, and a flaunting of that day's mores create great interest for readers.

Additionally, Heyer appears to have researched her history very carefully. I've never found an error in any of her books. Readers will learn a lot about the social rules in upper class England, more than in any other historical romance.

3: Sophy is really a grand girl.
Sophy is girl ahead of her time, she is not the victorian miss who stays at home and waits for a husband. She is very outgoing, friendly and funny. Sopy goes to stay with her Aunt (her father's sister) while her father goes to Spain. While with her Aunt's family she straightens out all the family's problems. She help's the oldest daughter find her true love, she helps the younger son to realize the problems that has plagued his older brother for years. In the end she finds her own happiness. I just love happy endings. Georgette Heyer has been gone for many years, but her stories are just as good today as the day she wrote them. I recomend this book to anyone who likes stories about Regency England.

4: Ignore the one anti-semitic comment and you have a great book
I loved this book. I thought Sophy was a great heroine and the book cruised by at the speed of light. There was one disturbing scene with a money lender that has been brought up in a few other reviews. This is certainly unfortunate because it did throw off my canter. But I like to tell myself that Ms. Heyer wasn't making a generalized comment on all Jews but that this particular one happened to be a very bad man. I also just pretend that he was just any guy and not any particular ethnicity. So, get past that and you have a truly entertaining book.

5: The Grand Sophy
The Grand Sophy is the most charming portrayal of a regency daughter brought up independently thinking who has no problem creating hillarious situations and wonderful word games to keep the reader entertained when even the possible ending becomes apparent very early on in this delightful story, one cannot wait to hear all the dialogue created in order to get there! Wonderful and always entertaining: such a joy for women of from teens through all ages.
