1: Thinking in another way
During my studies in Denmark, I had the opportunity to join a presentation of Michael Braungart. I got more and more into his ideas and impressions of producing and using things in a different way. I love Michaels and Williams ideas. Thinking in another way. They say us: Don't save energy, materials,.... Use as much as you can and don't feel bad about it. The thing is extraction of resources, production, usage and waste treatment have to be handeld in another way.
Like our nature is this product concept based on a cycle, the biological and technical cycle. Everything can be reused. Products are not treated with hazardous chemicals, waste is not going to landfill or incineration plants. Who thinks that incineration is a great idea, is totally wrong. Yeah, you can gain energy out of it, but did the people thought about burning our precious resources? There are so much more things to tell you.
But,.... You have to read it and you will love the concept.

2: Difficult to argue with...
This book is a real change in perspective from my usual "we're screwed" environmentalism attitudes. They don't argue for "business as usual" but that eco-products start with the designer yet still depend on consumerism. I agree that grassroots movements and government regulation have their roadblocks but I don't think i'll wait for the designers of consumer products to save the world alone!

3: Theory vs. practice
This is a five star book. It's not a recyclable book, it's a reusable book. The cradle to cradle thought process is intended to replace the previously considered to be thoughtful cradle to grave process. The end of a product should be the beginning of another. Reuse. That's the theory.
The practice is that this book can't be turned into any other book. No one is making further books with this synthetic (and superior and cradle to cradle planned) paper. And over the years the only product that ordinary folks ever use that is certified as cradle to cradle are the postal service's priority mail boxes. It's not a success across the board, just here and there. The practice of cradle to cradle has been a failure. Sorry! Wish it weren't the case, but it is.
Maybe someday we'll say, now everything is made cradle to cradle, can you imagine that it took so long to catch on?
