1: Touching and Poignant
This story was utterly breath taking. It was sweet, exciting, and sad all at once. Hadassah is the true epitome of what a Christian should be. She is self-sacrificing, loving, humble and forgiving. Even in the face of death her faith never waivered. It also never waivered when she had to choose between her love for God and her love for Marcus.
Julia was one character that I grew to loath the more I read about her. She was spoiled, self-centered and uncompassionate. I couldn't stand the fact that Marcus catered to her every whim which is one of the reasons she became the person that she was.
Marcus did the unthinkable in ancient Rome. He fell in love with a Jewish Christian who was his sister's slave. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Marcus because in falling with Hadassah he went up a against a mighty force and that was God.
The ending of this novel was gripping and touching. I had tears in my eyes as Marcus realized what Julia had subjected Hadassah to. His reaction was heart gripping. I look forward to reading the second installment.
I would strongly recommend this book.

2: Read only if you like exciting stories
This book was extremely good. The characters were alive and vibrant. I received a good lesson about Rome and about Roman culture. Plus it was a good reminder about how our brothers and sisters were persecuted and tortured because of their love for our Lord.
Do not be afraid to purchase this book, and once you start reading this exciting adventure--well you will be as hooked as I was.

3: Searching My Memory
I picked this book up a long time ago, skimmed over it to know the gist of it and put it back down. I found that I could not read it completely because, as another viewer said, it is not for the weak-hearted. If I had to find anything to compare it to today, I would compare it to the HBO series ROME. It is more Roman than Christian, meaning it is much more graphic than the usual Christian fare. It was the first book by Francine Rivers that I heard of, and I was almost scared off because this
book was so grim and realistic. I admire Rivers for being able to arouse such horror,anger and hatred in me for the Romans right from page 1. Because of these feelings, I can only give it 2 stars. It is not my kind of book because of the graphics and because of Hadassah. She is a wonderful Christian, probably the way Christians should be, but she is
quite unrealistic. I find it very hard to believe that she wouldn't have some temporary resentment for the Romans for killing her family,especially
for the Roman soldier who killed her brother and threw her sister's
lifeless body onto a pile of others. For her to say "I will never curse you" to that man later was VERY unreal. Hadassah witnessed it, for heaven's sake! I don't believe many people today could identify with her; I certainly didn't. If you don't mind these two points, buy this
book. It will be a real history lesson. As for me, I will stick with the Sons of Encouragement and Lineage of Grace series.
Personal Note: I would've liked it if her sister had survived. I've noticed that characters named Leah have a very hard time at the hands of
authors. They are either ugly, crazy, mean or they end up dead.

4: Brilliant Historical Fiction!
I generally enjoy a guy's read. In other words, I'm not interested unless the story has guns in it. I confess that, without reading any of her work, I wrote Francine Rivers off as Chick Lit.
In my home country, South Africa, she was really the only Christian fiction author available and, as such, I didn't read Christian fiction at all until a friend convinced me to give A Voice In The Wind a try. I read it and learned, in no uncertain terms, why her books have pride of place in every Christian retail outlet in my country.
The story was definitely not tame. Her characters are powerful and wild.
Ms. Rivers is captures the era with vivid imagery and keeps the reader riveted to the very last page. As I read my first Francine Rivers novel, I found myself enthralled - and unable to put the book down.
My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that A Voice In The Wind is really half the story. If you buy this novel, make sure you purchase the sequel An Echo in the Darkness (Mark of the Lion #2) along with it. There's no way you will read this book and not want to know more about these characters and their story.
Having read my first Francine Rivers novel, I became an immediate fan and wasted no time getting the next book in the series.

5: Fantastic!
I usually avoid Christian fiction because what I have read in the past never made me care about the characters or the plot for that matter. However, I also wanted to avoid the immoral content of modern, popular fiction, so I would read mostly 19th-century classics in order to find a balance between plot and morality. This is one of the only pieces of modern fiction that both mesmerized me and deepened my walk with Christ at the same time. Amazing!
