Customer Review:

1: Good art, dissapointing writing
I am a huge fan of Brom and bought this as soon as it came out. I must say that I was really let down by Brom's writing. I'm surprised no one close to him said "Maybe you should just stick to the pictures" while reading his drafts. I was going to buy Plucker but after seeing that he wrote that as well I have decided against it.

5 stars for artwork, 1 star for poor writing, 3 stars overall.

2: Brom needs to learn how to write
I loved the pictures in this book, but Brom needs some writing lessons. For example, at one point he has a Wild West Texas Ranger using the visual image "like koi in a pond." Come on! It jarred. Completely threw me off.

3: Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
What an amazing book! The illistrations and story are great!Came across this book by accident glad I bought it.Definatly recommend it for others!

4: typical brom literature
well, if you read the plucker, devil's rose will probably be a bit of a let down. the story is so-so. the art is pretty decent. probably the funniest/coolest idea he had for the book is Cole's horse. it's really a demon and at one point it gets hit by a car and it's body is mangled. the bounty hunter cut's the head off and sticks it on the handlebars of a motorcycle (as on the cover). later it ends up on the hood of a car. pretty creative. the art for those scenes is cool, too.

overall, it's not as good as the plucker. shorter, not as well written, and no spiffy dust jacket. if you're buying it for a collection of brom art, i recommend darkwerks or offerings.

5: Great art, story not bad!
I was given a copy of The Plucker for Christmas last year and couldn't get through 2 pages of it. The art was great, but the writing and story did not engage me. Brom has improved greatly with Devil's Rose. Not only are the paintings the dark, demonic portraits which originally attracted me to Brom's art, but the story is much better. He's no Peter Straub or Stephen King (and it's clear our friend Roland the Gunslinger was a MAJOR influence on the character of Cole), but Brom's done a good job of developing Cole into an antihero we can all feel sympathy for. The story's not perfect, but I will definitely pick up the sequel as it certainly seems there will be a second installment about Cole and his search for Rose through the realms of Hell. Good job, Brom!
