1: Ok but no where near great.
I wanted a more comprehensive book than this. Too bad I could not find one. It covers fewer than 150 of the more than 1850 species, less than 10%. Some of the more noted snakes of the world are not covered at all. Not the Fer de Lance (does have a small side bar on this one), not the King Cobra, none of the sea snakes. But despite this there is a complete (I think) dierctory of the snake families in the back with all the members listed telling their habitat, where they are located, whether they are egg laying or live bearing, and what they are thought to eat. It appear there is little known information on some snakes. This does make up for the lack of data in the main portion of the book.
When I was young our public library had an outstanding book on snake, no color photos but a lot of information. That was many years ago.

2: Great Snake Resource
The images in this book are top-notch. It's a great resource for tattooing because you can clearly see every scale on every snake photo. Very impressive photography.

3: Impressive book, nice arrangement of contents
I got this book for my daughter's 10th birthday. She really likes it. The pictures are vivid and colorful and abundant. She really likes how it is arranged by type of snake. It's written for anyone to read - not too simplistic, nor is it full of long scientific terms.

4: Snake
I bought this book as a Christmas present for my 7-year-old grandson who loves snakes even though his father is terrified of them. When my grandson started opening the present and saw that it had a snake on the cover he put it down and hid it, quietly going on to another present. I was afraid he didn't like it but it turned out he didn't want his father to see it and be frightened. :)
The book itself is great. Lots of detailed pictures and good scientific information on the snakes presented. Later, my grandson sat down with me and showed me the type of python he had held at school and we talked about all the other snakes. This is a very good book for learning and identifying snakes. It is not, however, a replacement for a field guide.

5: Best Coffee Table Book Ever - also informative
The photographs are large, colorful, and simply spectacular. After providing general information about snakes, the book spends the majority of time on specific species - most with their own two page spread. Each species is treated to a brief introduction, with key points of information, a glorious photograph, a little history, size, diet, etc. Some include mention of localities or related species.
This book is informative, but primarily serves as EXCELLENT eye candy for the snake lover and provides brief explanations of the more well-known or interesting species. The price is also right for what you get.
I can only think of one downside to this book - there are a few species/localites that I would liked to have read about that are not included on the "expose" pages.
