1: AWESOME teen nove. Really makes you think.
I really loved reading this book! I'm a little bit older than the main character so i easily related to her and by the end of the book she had me seriously contemplating my life. It was an interesting read that keep my attention the entire time, from cover to cover. I highly reccomend this book to anyone looking for a nice light teen read with a little drama and little romance.

2: A World Where Everyone MUST Be Cliched...
I am sick of this.
Every damned teen-novel I have ever read in my entire life where the main character is a female virgin---she's no longer a virgin by the novel's end. Oh Lord forbid humans have any restant & that everyone must have intercourse before an age of 18. Boo! I have always felt extremely insulted as a human being after reading any sort of this airey trash.
No, I am not some psycho Christian nor sheltered child, & I have enjoyed stories where sex is prominate such as 'Girls' & 'Eyes Wide Shut'. But these stories explore the theme of sexuality as a part of human nature rather than insult Lord-forbid-virgins. I have even enjoyed stories where couples share tender first love-making, but these stories imply that this is to be done when emotionally ready & as a spiritual act. Their goal is not simply for the protagonist to lose her virginity as 'Vegan, Virgin, Valentine' does (that title says it all--ugh).
& golly, not only does the character lose her virginity but she also tosses aside her 'petty' morals & starts feasting away on animals again. Oh, but she only eats a grilled-cheese-sandwich you say. But how long until she begins dreaming of consuming a basket full of fried chicken? You only live once, right? VVV radiates this moral over & over & over again, while magically keeping everything innocent, hiding the genuine seedy nature of this life style. But the truth of the matter is: why not go 'borrow' some stranger's car or give blackboot heroine a try? You only live once, right? (I'm aware that not all partiers behave this way; still they're bound to encounter these things. Actually, revealing these complications & consequences could have really added a punch to this awful book--doing so would have boosted it into a mature & thoughtful read. Too bad. So sad.)
Of course it's a given that revelations are premature & relationships underdeveloped in VVV. The story's main focus is the outcome itself rather than the journey & events leading up to it. Mara's & V's bond is left unexplored & cliched. The characters all remain paper-thin, exposing only their face-value & nothing truly underneath. Mara herself, naughty or nice, lacks any sort of unique zest that would make her an interesting character to know, let alone read about. Even at the naive age of 13 I realized this.
I read this book a long time ago--out of curiousity in its hype, back when I still somehow held faith in the genre. This is the only imprint it left on me. It's basically all a philosophy on how maintaining perfection is a tiring & pointless struggle. True as that may be, the book ends up serving a parallel philosophy that you should abandon what makes you 'you' in order to obtain 'genuine popularity'.
Real spiritual, real deep, right...
I'm ashamed I actually read this muck at any point in my life.
If you are an intelligent individual, don't read this slimey heap of mush. Don't encourage this shallow, shallow literature.
Otherwise teenagers are just going to remain stuck to these ignorant lables. Aren't we worthy of better?

4: Fabulous!
I loved this book!!! Carolyn Mackler's books are great, witty, and you get a good laugh while you're reading. I love happy endings and this one was great! V and Mara didn't get along at all at first but then near the end they came together. I also loved it when V and Mara kept each others secret from Mara's parents, even though they might have not gotten along they put trust in the other person. I was so happy for V and Mara when they both get something they deserved for their past conflicts. Like for V it was the school musical and for Mara it was James. All and all it was exciting book! Definitely check out The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things!

5: not award winning, but fun
Many of the reviews on this book talk about it in a negative light, some are well-worded, and others miss the "point" of the story completely. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I feel that this book should have at least a few positive statements on it.
It's not a fantastic book, I've read better in this genre, and out of this genre there are better books, but I think for anybody who is just willing to sit back and escape their world for a while, it's a perfect book for that- which is what a book should be.
The story, as noted in other reviews is about a straight A high school student who, with the onset of her niece coming to live with her family and a new romantic relationship, is forced to re-evaluate why she wants to be valedictorian, and have enough college credits to begin college as a sophomore. It's your basic over-achiever who overcomes who she is "suppose" to be, to become who she really is.
There aren't any major revelations, when reading it, you know the course is inevitable and there aren't any major plot twists, but what makes the book entertaining is the language it's written in. It's not brilliant, but its a fast read, and fun- some parts can be laugh out loud funny if you're just willing to go along with it. I'd recommend it to anybody who just wants to sit back and be mildly amused for a few hours- not people looking for deeper meaning or characters with deep human complex emotions- what you get is on the page, and not a whole lot more, but I don't want my 4 hours back that it took to read it, so I feel like in the end, it was worth it.
