1: Paso A Paso Level 1
This is one of the most complete Spanish textbook. We use it often as part of our Spanish curriculum and tutoring program - www.SpanishLuna.com

2: Not so impressed
I am currently using this book with level I Spanish and I have to say that I find it to be very confusing for the students. The activities in the book are appropriate and varied, but the lack of written directions sometimes confuses the students, especially visual learners. Also, I find the choice of vocabulary words to be unusual and difficult for first-time learners to grasp; the students don't even know what "stingy" means in English! And I am not a big fan of the order in which everything is presented. Although there is an attempt to center on the students (only teaching "me gusta", "te gusta", "yo soy", "tu eres" instead of all conjugations for everything), the book does not allow the students to talk about their background until chapters 4 and 5. On a good note -- the book only offers a few vocabulary words at a time, instead of a list of 30-40 words like many books do. Overall, I'd say this is a good book for people who have been through the language learning process before, not for first-time learners.

3: Pretty good, more vocab oriented
I like the Paso a Paso series. I skipped from Spanish I to Spanish IV with the help of these books. You do indeed develope pretty good, and useful, vocabulary in the texts. You are also ready for the next book if all you get to is chapter 8. Only 8 chapters are necessary. Though, you will have a more solid foundation with all chapters of each book.

This book takes it slow. But in a good way. It does not throw 8 tenses at you right away. If you go the normal route, going only to chapter 8, you will only be equipped with the present tense. You will also have the yo imperative.

Book 2, you get the preterit, imperfect, and present progressive.

Book 3, you get the perfect tenses (I have done, I had done), the imperatives, and the future. If you do get through all of this book, you will have the subjunctive and conditional with you. Basically, everything you really need.

Usually the subjunctive is held off until Spanish IV. And a different text book is used.

If you get this series, you will not be disappointed. Just get the workbooks, and do them. I have two copies of each workbook, and a copy of each book. You also might want to have someone to help you, and maybe some audio if you want to become really proficient.

In all, get ALL three and the three workbooks if you want to get a good grasp of the language.

Oh, and as the title says, this is more vocabulary oriented. So you are not hit around with too much grammar. But, by the end, you WILL have most of the grammar you need! (by end, I mean end of the three books)

LASTLY, you might want to pair up with someone with this book. A lot of partner activities are in here.

4: good
Good text book. It will prepare you for what you need to know. I bought this book and skipped Spanish 1 in 9th grade. All As in Spanish 2. I can't complain.

Frankly, I'm not really interested in Spanish. The book isn't interesting, but it is helpful if you want to get a start in the language.
