Customer Review:

1: See the light & improve your image capture
"Exposure & Lighting for Digital Photographers" is not the final word on photography, nor is it the Holy Grail for flawless digital captures.

It is a well-written, east-to-read, nicely illustrated tutorial whose pages flow by quickly and easily while summarizing the basic principles of photography which will in turn help many folks obtain better captures in the field.

What you will get out of it depends upon your own present photo acumen & skill set. Those who know very little about photography will find the book to be a photgraphic enlightenment as you are introduced to the fundamentals of light and exposure. Those with basic camera skills will appreciate the clear, precise information and the practical examples which will help you to improve your in-camera captures. Many of us think we know what we are doing, but this book contains something for most any avid amateur.

I myself am a long-time amateur who finds some things I already knew along with lots of things I've never thought very much about. "Exposure & Lighting" has sharpened my skills and knowledge. As always I continue to enjoy capturing pixels, but now with more precision and less effort in the field. It's a good book for getting one's feet wet. How much further you will take it depends upon what your individual goal of photography is.

I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has gone digital but remains indecisive and unsure about what to do. It won't solve all of your problems, but it's an easy, engaging read which will improve your captures withinout numbing your mind. Folks like myself will gain from new insights which might in turn lead you to other sources which offer more detailed and technical explanations. In any case, we can all feel like we're an Ansel Adams, if only for a moment.

2: Recommended for Beginning and Intermediate Photographers
If you're a beginning or intermediate photographer looking to learn more about exposure and lighting, then this is the book for you. It's easy to follow - with plenty of good illustrations. After you read this book you'll be able to take your digital camera off "Auto" and get control of your photos. I especially enjoyed the "Pro Tips" that are located throughout the book.

3: Not that great...
I didn't manage to read the whole book (only the first third) because I got bored. It may be useful though for the very beginner photographer.

I stopped at Chapter 7 when I've read "Apertures toward the extremes of the range often tend to exhibit somewhat less sharpness and more distortion". The statement is correct regarding sharpness but not true regarding distortion (which doesn't change with aperture but does change on a zoom with focal length).

I do not recommend this book.

4: Nothing really new, but...
First I should say the title is not totally accurate as I was not familiar with the Zone System by Ansel Adams and the book has an interesting section on it. As for the rest, no truly new information is provided that could not either be provided by an experience with slide films, or inferred from digital cameras manuals. Still the text is quite fluent and provides a good refresh about known notions; moreover the pictures are stunning. I would encourage people in two groups to buy the book: big budget beginners with an interest in improving the quality of their pictures (the book in fact talks about _many_ expensive equipments), or experienced photographers wanting to have some new inspirations.

5: Good Instruction
This book is for the beginning photographer who wants to learn how to capture better images. It provides a fair amount of technical information but in a way that is easy to understand. I highly recommend this to anyone who isn't happy with their "point and shoot" behaviors.
