1: Best Yet
Bringing together themes and events from past Garrett novels, this rousing tale moves the "detective" into position for future changes, while wrapping the background story in a thoroughly enjoyable comedy of errors.
I laughed through several chapters, and was still chuckling to the end. If you have enjoyed Garrett in the past, especially Sweet Silver Blues (Garrett Files)and Bitter Gold Hearts (Garrett Files), buy this book. It is especially lighter and less turgid than Cook's last Garrett novel: Whispering Nickel Idols: A Garrett, P.I., Novel.

2: Cook improves, re-focuses series
I once believed that Cook was wrapping up the series in the last novel. With the confinment of Chodo Contague & daughter to the asylum, the series seemed to have run its course.
Wrong.
Cook was clearing away the old set of villains like they were an old hand of cards. And invigorating the series with fresh new baddies & new assumptions.
Garret is now dealing with a city gripped by lightning-fast change, & a new & scurrying hodre of hustlers, sorcerers & corrupt businessmen looking to take advantage of the change. Add some cops who hate his guts, & lots of risk & menace, & you get a top-notch Garret novel.

3: Lovely metal music
Once more Garrett is hustled out of a relaxing winter's beer soaking by cruel employment and a bevy of lovely ladies longing for the stage.
I am a long time fan of Cook's work, considering the Black Company series one of the best pulp series every written and the Garrett series one of the most enjoyable. I have read nearly everything he has written despite the difficulty in getting older out of print books.
Cruel Zinc Melodies is a great read for Garrett fans. Full of the usual suspects and some new characters of various natures. We see more of the wizardly Hill crowd then in most books in the series. We also see the big guy seriously considering a long over due marriage, or at least engagement, to Tinnie Tate. The troubles revolve around a Theater being built by the Wieder family that is threatened by toughs and bugs and ghost, oh my.
For long time fans of the series this is another great adventure with our favorite ex-marine. For new comers its a little late in the game to hop in. Some knowledge of the characters history with Garrett and each other is indispensable. For readers new to the series start with Sweet Silver Blues and then any of the other books in the 12 book series. Its well worth the time to dig up these older books up.

4: Excellent Divergence
John D. MacDonald: Five Complete Travis McGee Novels
I don't really understand the complaints about the complexity or length of this book. All of the previous books are derivative of John D MacDonald's excellent Travis McGee series with a little fantasy thrown in right down to the naming convention. Macdonald uses colors instead of metals in every title.
Both are great reads but this is the first time the series stands on it's own feet and diverges from the MacDonald formula. Many of the tale's old friends come back for a rousing romp in a more convoluted plot. I hope there are more coming even if it is co-authored or even ghost written! If you want simple go back to the beginning or read Travis McGee. I find many of the characters laugh out loud funny and each one has similar depth. Kudos to Glen Cook

5: Cruel Zinc Melodies by Glen Cook
Fantasy Noir. That's the best way to describe this series. If you liked the others you'll like this one and if you haven't read the others don't worry, it's also a stand alone novel. Great read.
