Customer Review:

1: Great book but not new
This book was advertised as new so I bought it for my husband (this is his account) and it is not new - June 1989 first printing. The paperback version is new. I wish it would have said that. But the book is excellent. Just go through you or your husbands old books and see if it is there in hardback before you buy it.

2: Best Garrett PI book so far
This is the best Garrett book I've read so far. Glen Cook does not always cooks a convincing story line (sorry for the pun); this one was excellent, a real mystery story a la Agatha Cristie but with Gothic flavor. Almost Victorian :-) And it is nice once in a while to see Garrett going without help from the Dead Man.

3: Spoiler free - This is a fantastic book
I've waited a long time to write this review since this book has been long out of print (nearly 20 years). Now that it's being reprinted, I thought I'd chime in...

Be warned, however, that this is the 4th book in the Garret series and you should read the others prior to this one. It took me some serious research back in the early/mid 90's to figure out the order or the first few books in this series.

This book is far darker than any of the other Garret novels, but it still has his trademark humor.

I've read this book 3 times - it's that good. If asked what my favorite book is, I'd have to pick this one.

4: Warning -- this is book four.
Book four? Just found out, and this is not a stand alone novel. It's missing backstory and key descriptions of past events. The inside front cover, book spine, and illustrated outer cover gave me no indication this was anything other than a stand-alone novel. Picked it up at a second hand fantasy book store.

I read it, and found it merely OK. I didn't have much identification with or attachment to the characters. Apparently this is built up in earlier novels. To me, "Old Tin Soldiers" ended up a typical detective story in a fantasy world, with a plot twist and a few lines of snarky inner dialogue. As usual with the mixing of fantasy and detection, the harsh logic of deduction didn't blend well with magic and mythical abilities, creating situations which felt like deus-ex. Character names, like Dr. Doom, contributed campy comic book parodies, ruining the dramatic haunting atmosphere.

Overall, I can't recommend this story, but maybe it is better if you read the first three volumes, and I didn't. To me, (any of) the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher are superior to this work.

5: Garrett No. 4
Old Tin Sorrows

Old Tin Sorrows is the fourth book in the Garrett Files collection. Garrett is a tough ex-marine, private investigator in the mold of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. The series is set in a fantasy world that is quite amusing. His advisor is "the Dead Man" who is really not a man at all and isn't dead exactly, but, oh never mind, buy this book; you'll want to read it several times. In this book Garrett is doing a favor for his old marine Sergeant who asks him to figure out who is poisoning his ex-general (who just happens to have a beautiful young daughter.

He, also introduces a new character, a Dr. Doom who sounds like he could be in future books,at lest I hope so, he sounds interesting

Highly recommended for fans of Cook and high adventure.
