1: great for fans of the Miss Spider television series
This series is really nice-- fun for kids, but also enjoyed by adults (I am a huge fan). The illustration style is very interesting and unique--bright colors, endearing characters, engaging stories-- you can't go wrong.
Both the books and the neat DVDs in the "Miss Spider" series are always based around caring about others, understanding their feelings, and being considerate. The characters are not perfect-- they make mistakes, etc. But in the end they learn important lessons about family, friendship, and how we should treat others.
Interestingly, Miss Spider was herself an adopted "buggie" (you may enjoy the Miss Spider original book). As an adult her own family includes adopted buggies, too. Most children who live with their biological parents will not think twice about this aspect of the series, but kids who have been adopted may appreciate the subtle way in which Miss Spider stories show that adoption is a wonderful way to make or expand your family-- and that what defines a family is love.

2: The Smallest of Superheroes and Friends
This is "Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends" easy-reader book #9, based on the television story by the same name. This story, as of the writing of this review, hasn't yet aired in the United States on either Nick Jr. or Noggin, so fans of the series would do well to check out this "new" story in the series.
Dragon, Squirt and Shimmer are out playing superheroes. They "rescue" Lil Sis and Princess Honey (a new character introduced in "The Prince, the Princess and the Bee") from Felix the frog (another relatively new character.) The two bugs aren't as happy about being "rescued" as was expected and definitely aren't happy when they're called "little." Miss Spider and Eunice Earwig try to put them together in a buddy system. But when Dragon, Squirt and Shimmer laugh at the idea of Lil Sis and Honey having "flower power," the two go off on their own.
This is a story of making a mistake, but ultimately coming through to help others. It also shows kids how important safety is, and what they can do to stay safe.
