Customer Review:

1: Enjoyable, not outstanding, but definitely worth reading
I loved the book's Old New York setting. I liked the hero and heroine, and the secondary characters as well, although I was disappointed that not all story lines were tied up at the end. There wasn't enough romance, however, or enough tenderness, and just when there was the promise of both, it was over. But I plan on trying another of McKinney's work, and would recommend "Lions and Lace" to anyone who especially likes "a hero who's out for revenge and finds love instead" story.

2: Lions and Lace
I really enjoyed the characters and story of this title. I've actually read it more than once as it's that good. It's one of those you don't want to put down.

3: Couldn't put it down!
I read thought the reviews of this book and I couldn't believe that there were actually negative ones. I totally agree with the gal who said she'd read tons of romance novels and this was her favorite. Out of all the romance novels I've bought, I've only kept three. This was one of them. (The other two are Jude Deveraux' "Knight in Shining Armour" and Diana Gabeldon's "Outlander" - check them out!!!)

I bought Lions and Lace back in '93 or so and just found it the other day when I was cleaning. Last night I thought I'd flip through it again - just really quickly ...and ended up reading the entire thing again, staying up until 2AM. It's just really well-written, the characters and plot are really interesting - and c'mon, how can you resist an Irish hero?

4: Looked like it was well written, but...
From the back cover:

She played by high society's rules...

The gaslight's glow lit Alana Van Alen's golden hair. Born to luxury, she belonged with the Astors and the Vanderbilts at cotillions and soirees. But she shivered with fear and something more as she faced the handsome, ruthless Trevor Sheridan. He had bankrupted her fortune and would expose her family's scandalous secret unless she accepted his outrageous offer, his emotional blackmail...his heart-stopping kiss.

He broken them all...

Born Irish, brought up in the streets, Trevor "the Predator" Sheridan learned early how to get the wealth the women he wanted. An expert as games of power, he played one that would destroy every famous family who snubbed him. Tricking the beautiful Alana was his trump card. But he never intended to want her...until her beauty and her resolve stole his breath away.

Now their desires swept them toward rapture...or ruin.

And my review:

This seemed like a well-written novel, at least what I read of it, that is. I was a little wary of this book, after reading all the reviews about the unfeeling hero and lack of romantic tenderness in the story. But I never even got far enough for that to be an issue.

My problem is with a scene very early on in the book when Trevor, the hero, goes to confession. He confesses 'relieving' people of their money (he says he's not really stealing, but he is causing them to lose it because of phoney stock tips) in revenge for them snubbing his sister. What bothered me was how Trevor bargained the priest down from 100 rosaries to a mere 3 (you do NOT bargain on your penance!), and how he refused to make restitution, even after the priest told him to. Instead, he says he will donate the equivalent amount of money to the church, rather than give it back to the people he stole it from (standard practice--you make amends to the people you've hurt).

What got my goat is how the priest agrees to all this! He doesn't like it, but he gets chewed down by Trevor anyway. First of all, if Trevor wasn't truly penitent, then he shouldn't have been going to confession in the first place. That's like a mafia hitman murdering someone in cold blood, then thinking that a trip to the confessional makes it all okay, just so he can do it all over again. Secondly, the priest should never have backed down. Why are Catholics always protrayed as weak or corrupt?

I am Catholic, and while I'm not a zealot, I believe that the sacrament of confession is sacred. I felt that this was a real disrespect of a religious rite that has great meaning and significance to millions of people. Something sacred to them. I don't just feel this way about something against my own religion--I was one of the first people to be deeply offended by Adam Sandler's disgraceful parody of the Hanukkah song in 'Eight Crazy Nights', and I'm not Jewish.

Yes, I know not many people will agree with me, but I'm sure that other Catholics out there who read romance novels will want to avoid this book for this very reason.

5: Good book, but...
...you never know if he loves her or not. i think that's the problem with the story- even in the end he was still mean tp her, w/c is bad for a romance novel. on th other hand, u are sure Trevor loves mara which is kind of funny. I think that's why other readers are upset becaus they dont like how trevor was willing to sacrifice alana for mara. everything he did was for mara, mara, mara, mara, etc. even in the last page of the book u can tell hed do ANYTHING for mara but for alana ur not sure. for trevorm, everything he does is for mara, mara, mara,... always. Some find it sweet but i dont bcus it's all done by hurting alana- are u forgetting this? Poor alana >:(
