2: Ok but not recommended. I wished it would be over and skimmed some parts.
There was too much civil war history. I'd prefer less history and more character interaction - for a romance novel. Sometimes there was too much time spent in the heads of the characters. For example, Jesse was thinking about all the political and slavery issues about to happen before the civil war. Jesse and Kiernan loved each other. She kept denying it to herself and claimed she hated him because he was on the side of the Yanks. Even though she loved Jesse, she married Anthony, and then cried afterwards. I didn't care for her judgment and actions.
Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: eight. Setting: 1859 to 1861 Virginia. Copyright: 1991. Genre: historical romance, civil war.

3: classic, but not my favorite
As other reviers said, Heather Graham does have the civil war knowledge down and writes it well, especially in the love story of Kiernan and Jesse. But, as with many of her novels, i was honestly overly frustrated the whole time reading until the problems were solved. I love heather graham, and she is a master of creating tension, but her civil war and historicals create too much of it for me. to the point i just wanted to finish it so i wouldnt be on edge about all (and there were a lot) of the problems between the main characters. i realize the civil war, being on different sides of it, allows for these difficulties but its too much for me. the love story is a well done one, however, and i did enjoy the book, when i finished it.

4: Enjoyable read
This Civil War novel was surprisingly good. There were some akward passages where the editor could have done a better job. However, overall good story and fun to read. I would recommend this book if you like historical romance. I will definitely try more Heather Graham novels-this was a first for me.

5: This one is a classic!!
As an avid reader of anything about the Civil War, I am always amazed at how historically inaccurate many books are. This one is the exception. To say that Heather Graham has done her homework would be an understatement. She has a unique talent for blending history, romance, and sexual tension that grabs a reader from page one and doesn't let go. The hero of the story, Jesse Cameron is absolutely to die for! He's handsome, a doctor, a Union officer, a wealthy Virginia plantation owner-need I say more. He also has a strong sense of loyalty and honor that is often missing in romantic male lead characters. He is not one of those typical rakes that needs to be reformed by a good woman. He is already a great guy who doesn't play games and isn't afraid to admit what and who he wants. The story is wonderful and heartwrenching at the same time with beautifully developed main characters as well as secondary characters. I highly recommend this book as well as the two other books in the Cameron Civil War trilogy: "One Wore Grey" and "One Rode West." This is the best Civil War series I have read.
