1: A fine dish of romance mixed with mystery
The very popular Nora Roberts wrote some four dozen romance books under her own name and some two and a half dozen murder mysteries ending with the word "death" as J. D. Robb. Many public libraries devote an entire shelf to her "recent books." This volume successfully mixes romance, mystery, murder, suspense, family, and a love of and respect for animals.
The plot is the traditional tale of preteens of opposite sexes being introduced reluctantly, infatuation, love, the girl's first sex, separation as they leave for college, tears, the male finding new interests, relations broken, misunderstandings, and meeting again with suspicions. However, Nora Roberts' version is well-crafted and filled with "schmaltz" and loving, faultless and considerate grandparents, horses and cougars. The girl is goal oriented, acquires a PhD, starts a successful business and is highly respected. The boy quits college, becomes a police officer, leaves to form his own detective agency and then abandons it. He has few friends and is unable to discover what he wants to be.
The two find a dead body when they are youngsters. Years later, they hear of other similar murders. Suspense builds as we wonder if the murders are somehow related to our heroin. Then, the couple encounters someone who murders animals and we wonder if this is also related to her. Thus, even readers who dislike romances will enjoy this tale.

2: Montana Sky 2.0?
I love Nora Roberts - I have been reading her stuff for over 10 years. However, less than half-way through "Black Hills" I had an overwhelming sense of deja-vu. I honestly thought I had picked up my well worn copy of "Montana Sky" by accident!
As always, the characters are fun, the story follows a familiar arc, and the 'mystery' is easily solved before the (anti)climax.
If you love the predictability of Nora and just want to waste some time with fluff, go ahead and read it. If you are looking for something new and fresh - I would suggest you look elsewhere.

3: Great Buy
This was a great purchase. The book sells for way more money in the store and we could never find it at Target or Wal-Mart out here. The book came before it was supposed to be here and it was in great condition and not at all tarnished! My wife loves it!

4: LOVED IT!!!
I got this book at the library just because of the cover and the storyline on the back seemed to be an ok book, after finishing My Soul to Take i really thought Black Hills was going to be a bad book....(I was really close minded) WRONG! i almost took it to the library and one night at 11:30 pm (Friday) i gave the book a chance, well i didnt close the book until 5 am! the story was so so so so good. The last time i read a book that i couldnt put it down was Twilight and that was almost 2 yrs ago i finally found another favorite book! I finished the book in 2 days. I loved the characters specially Lil and Coop they both made me laugh and also made me sad at times. At the end of th book i so wanted more i even went to the computer to see if Nora was thinking on writing a sequel to this one, more i dont think i will get that lucky. Read the book, give a chance like i did and you will find a good book.
