1: My Favorite Creative Writing Text
I love this book for my undergraduate poetry workshops. It's smart but clear and not at all pedantic. A Poet's Companion is written by good poets, who include good poetry. This isn't so easy to find . . .

2: poet's companion
Some parts of the book were helpful but on the whole I should have saved my purchase price and gone to the Public Library for help.

3: Excellent Text Book
This book makes learning to write poetry fun and accessible. The exercises are intelligent, and the author takes a realistic approach to the topic. Let's face it; we all can't, or won't, be Shakespere. Yet we all can enjoy poetry, apart from the baggage that the public school system has inflicted upon us. This book is a step in that right direction.

5: One of My Favorite Book Partners!
The Poet's Companion is a well-written, useful and enjoyable book to read and to utilize for reference. The authors have combined their experience and presented tools for the writer and reader of poetry.
I especially enjoyed the poet's talking about what they are trying to accomplish as poet's, such as: connecting to the world and learning what it is you want to do with language.
There are sections on items such as diction, grammar, forms (delightful!) and revision. I found the best chapter to be Writer's Block where the author's address ideas on how to live and write, write and live.
I have gotten a great deal of use out of the exercises and I only did one in each section because I really wanted to get a good review out there for this book. The exercises can be for beginners or more in depth for the more advanced poet. I found the exercises to be something new, and not the same ones I see in every practice/idea book.
I would happily purchase this book again, if nothing else for just the exercises and the very helpful appendices. The only item that is lacking in this book would be difficult to do and that is the internet information that is quite outdated.
This is a must have!
