1: Simply put, the perfect historical romance.
This is a marvelous romance. More than fifty years after it's initial publication, it is fresh, funny and puts the current crop of romance offerings to shame.
The anti-hero, Dominic, is a rake par excellence. He is reckless, selfish and addicted to his own pleasures. Having wounded his man in a duel, he is sailing on the tide for France. He plans to take along a little light entertainment, the beautiful Miss Sophia Challoner.
Sophia's foolish mother hopes to force Dominic to marry Sophia. Sophia is more than happy to throw her bonnet over the windmill.
Sister Mary is wiser than these two conspirators. The proud Marquis of Vidal will never make such a misalliance. Sophia will simply be ruined.
Mary intends to prevent this potential scandal. She plans to substitute herself for her sister. Then she shall portray such a strong rendition of a grasping, mercenary harpy that the Marquis will happily abandon her and his intended seduction.
Mary's plan fails totally. The angry, disgusted Dominic abducts her and sails for France. The rest of the story you will have to read for yourself.
This romance is fast-paced, the dialogue and conversations are utterly amusing and the characters are simply real. Dominic's mother is French, and there is a marvelous extended family on both sides of the Channel. This extended family has concerns and conflicts of their own that add to the reader's enjoyment. There is not a false note in this entire novel. This romance is an absolute keeper.
A purchase you will not regret.

2: One of the best, with all the rest
I just recently discovered the wonderful world of Georgette Heyer's Regency England/France and am, now, a devoted fan. In fact I think that I am obsessed. I have already purchased eight of her Regency novels and read all of them twice. Devil's Cub although not my first read is at the top of my list of favorites. I love the character's that she creates and the humor disbursed through out the story lines. And, there has always been some laugh out loud surprise along with the adventure and, alas, the romance. I am torn as to whether to recommend people to read These Old Shades before the Devil's Cub, simply because it is a sequal, so to speak, and certain characters would be familiar and carry their history forward.
I really wish that more men would read Ms. Heyer's works and learn some lessons from these gentlemen. Even the rakes have qualitys non-existant in today's society.
Along with Devil's Cub, I recommend Black Sheep, Venetia, Lady of Quality The Nonesuch and Arabella. The Unknown Ajax, although somewhat different was very entertaining and Sprig Muslin was a hoot, but hard to get into. It took me half way through the book before I got IT. Please do yourself a favor and take a chance on any or all of these wonderful novels.

3: Devil's Cub
I have been a fan of Georgette Heyer for some time and read many of her works. Unlike some of the Heyer novels, this one references characters she introduced in an earlier novel, These Old Shades. I had read the earlier work not knowing I would see many of the same characters again. I enjoyed both novels, but it felt like the end of this one was a bit rushed.

4: Devil's cub
I just finished reading 'Devil's Cub' what an excellent book. Couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I just can't understand why they do not make movies or TV series out of her books. For me her books are as good as Jane Austen's.
The funny thing is everytime you read one of her books you think it's the best until you read the next one. Just until recently An Infamous Army was my favorite however now Devil's Cub is the best :)
I just loved the characters of Vidal and Mary the chemistry between them is unbelievable. You can read so many books now where the author takes you to the bedroom and really you don't feel anything, on the other hand in Georgette Heyer books the maximum is a kiss and not more than that. However that one kiss will make you soooooooooooooooo happy!!!!!!!!!!1
I was surprised to see some negative reviews. We should keep in mind these stories are about people living during the Regency time or Georgian accordingly their habits, language, values were different and don't forget women needed men's protection. The most important thing we should leave our 21 century ideas out while reading these.
Is there anyone out there who loved this book as much as I did?

5: My Favorite of the 18th Century Heyers
I took the downloaded version on a trip and was absolutely entranced by the story. I had forgotten how much I liked this book. Heyer's characters are lively, her descriptions economical but always on point. Her secondary characters are often hilarious. The scene where Mrs. Challoner tries her inept hand at social blackmail, and Mrs. Marling tries to figure out what this apparently insane woman wants, is very, very funny as Mrs. Marling first takes Mrs. Challoner to be a dunning dressmaker and the two talk at lovely crosspurposes.
Now as to the narrator of the audiobook-- I thought he sounded very nasal. I can't recommend him as the voice of Vidal, although it was possible after a while to forget about the voice and just go with the story. The publisher though should have made an effort to get a good period actor who can do an 18th century voice for this one.
