1: I think the cover art says it all:
Take a careful look at this cover art. The hero is looking away from the heroine and seems absorbed in something other than her; a battle he's going to fight, perhaps. Which, basically, is the way the hero treats the heroine almost all the way through this story. He's lost his first wife, and he's still in love with his first wife, so he doesn't have any feeling, other than sexual, for the heroine (who's loved him for years). It was an unusual story - creating a hero still in love with his late wife, while his new wife fights to win his love - but this author just could not bring it all together for a believable, heartwarming ending.
I never warmed up to the heroine, myself, so I could understand why the hero wasn't falling for her either. The novel is almost all in her POV, which didn't make it any more intriguing (I prefer a story where we see everyone else's POV, particularly the hero's.) This was a very slow moving, uninvolving sort of romance novel. Very disappointing.

2: not so good
The author has skill but I did not like this book. Usually in a romance you feel affinity for the often plucky heroine. I wanted to give this one a smacking around. She wanted for no reason that I could figure out to marry Troye, which she did. Then she cried and whined and made demands because she didn't get what she wanted out of their arranged marriage. At one point while reflecting on her relationship with Troye she decides she's tried being nice, tried being patient, what more can she do? They had only been married for 3 months, how much patience could she have used in 3 months on a man still mourning the death of his first wife? She was a big, fat baby. I have no clue what the attraction for him was. Who wants to live with anyone that annoying?

3: One-sided love?
I love the idea of Harlequin Historical Romances, I really do, and I'm trying to have patience for them to get this new category ironed out. Having said that, this book is not really a step toward excellence, in my opinion. I'm all about a brooding, tormented battle hero, but, it took until the end of the book to bring him out of his tormented past into the present. I hated the sex scenes -- how can it be lovemaking when, by definition, love must be involved? The era the book is set in (medieval Briton) required stong women. Elenor had her moments, but disappoints overall.
Pick up a used copy, if you must.

4: Be afraid! Be very afraid!
The premise behind this book is great. A young girl falls for an older man and longs to be with him despite loads of setbacks. I liked the first few chapters, but then the girl's whining started. Imagine: almost 200 pages of a girl crying and suffering. None of the questions introduced are answered and the book itself is beyond predictable. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this book!
