1: Crusie's take on a Chandler classic
Former stockbroker Mitch is ready to turn in his PI badge and go back to his former career since finding errant spouses just ain't what its cracked up to be. Enter sexy femme fatale Mae Belle Sullivan (or Mabel as he likes to call her to get a rise out of her) who hires him to find the culprit who "murdered" her uncle Armand. Armand had a heart attack, but Mae wants whoever stole his diary to think that they'll be revealed as a murderer, so she can get the diary back. What they both uncover is that Armand was not a very likable guy (which Mae already knew), and a lot of people could be the culprit. Mitch is going to have to work overtime to keep from losing his heart and his head with this siren.

Crusie mines Raymond Chandler territory to tell a funny and cute story. While the writing is not that strong, and she has penned many much better stories, the foundation and essence of Crusie is there (including the quirky sidekick pet), foreshadowing the formidable writer force she will one day become. No one can combine chemistry and comedy like Crusie. It's a solid 3.5 star story.

2: Another fun mystery by Ms. Crusie!
I have a stash of books that I read and reread over and over again... They aren't great mind blowing "Literature"; however, they never fail to entertain me. This book is part of that collection. Jennifer Crusie has created her own genre of humorous romantic mysteries that emphasize reparté. This delightful read brings together a bored detective who is unhappy to discover that being Sam Spade isn't nearly as exciting as he had hoped and a knockout client with killer legs and an even more lethal family. Thrown together with a missing diary which holds a clue vital to the case and you have a mystery worthy of Sam Spade. But, this sassy client is holding out on our hero and he knows it. So off Jennifer takes us on yet another outrageous adventure which will leave you laughing and dreaming of sexy private eyes!

3: I was not interested in the characters.
The plot reminded me of a mystery "who done it" with questions, clues and suspects and the final culprit revealed at the end. I was not entertained and I wished it would be over. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: two. Setting: current day U.S. Copyright: 1995. Genre: mystery romance.

4: A Hilarious Whodunnit from Crusie!
I love Jennifer Crusie! Although this book didn't captivate me quite as much as her more recent releases, it still sparked with imagination, romance, and Crusie's wonderful humor!

Mae Sullivan is in need of a slow and stupid private eye to send on a wild goose chase for a non-existent murderer. Mitch Peatwick is about ready to pull out from his floundering detective agency, when his dream client walks through the door. He knows she's lying, but he's intrigued by the case. And by her. Then he finds out about Mae's mob relations, her uncle's floozy mistress, and millions of dollars that have disappeared into thin air. Suddenly, a murder doesn't seem quite as improbable.

Written in the form of a typical detective story, Crusie keeps us in the dark until the very end. Will Mitch solve the mystery? Will Mae get what she wants? Find out in this Crusie classic!

5: What the Lady Wants
I'm a big fan of Jennifer Crusie. All the books I've read of hers are entertaining and this was no different. It would have been better if I was a Sam Spade fan, but it was still a great read.
