1: Great Book!
I love this book! I have not read the new encyclopedia, but I do know that this is full of great information. If you are looking for a larger collection of data, you should probably look at the new encyclopedia (I am only guessing-I don't know how good the new one is yet.) but if you are looking for a smaller collection of information this book is for you! Because this was published near the end of the 1990's, it has no information on the prequels, but a lot about the original movies, television shows and specials, and books published before thst time. I enjoy this book.

2: Great Source of Star Wars Knowledge Regardless of What Others Say
This is a great book with outstanding facts on the Star Wars universe.
Many reviewers are putting it down because it is "out of date." Well, it was released 10 years ago before the pre-quals were even a reality. A wealth of information has come out since, and there will soon be an updated, 3-part version of this encyclopedia. I don't know whether the info in this book will be repeated in the updated version, but I would still recommend it because of its outstanding information alone. Even a casual fan would appreciate it. A real fan would still get it...if he/she doesn't have it already.

3: Star Wars Then and...well, just back then, really
In its time, this was a great resource for any true Star Wars geek. The entries are very thorough and reach into the most remote of minutiae within the Star Wars universe. Entries include characters, planets, events, and things that are uniquely of the Star Wars galaxy.
However, be aware that if you want a complete and up to date encyclopedia, this is no longer the source to rely on, as there is nothing from the prequels or anything since 1998 in here.

4: An Essential for Star Wars Fans
This is not a book for casual "Star Wars" fans. It covers things most of them have never heard. By no means complete (the Star Wars universe has new additions on an almost daily basis), it does have plenty of entries that were current up to the publication date.
For die-hards, this tome offers some pictures that have rarely been seen. Most are in color, some are in black and white (and some come from the Dark Horse comics). One glaring omission is the lack of any material from the Marvel Comics series. While that series has many critics, for a long time that was the only extra material "Star Wars" junkies had. Why those characters were omitted seems obvious (they aren't "official" parts of the universe anymore), it still would have been nice to read about our hero's adventures on the Marvel worlds and learn more about the Marvel characters.

5: star wars encyclopedia
i found the content great especially for it being the original trilogy and comic books as well as the mini movies. it was also suprising that it was current up to the modified episodes of 4-6.
