Customer Review:

1: Really annoying book
Some of the sub plots in this book were really interesting. But, the subplots about the mother's relationship, and the dolphin (don't even get me STARTED about the dolphin!)seemed to be just filler. It would have been better if those subplots were totally left out, and more time was spent developing the other characters. They all seemed very flat to me, although I felt McCrumb tried to flesh them out. More character development could have achieved this, and maybe then I would have been actaully intersted in the characters of A.P. Hill, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth's brother. See, I just finished the book the other day, and I can't remember his name already. Also, something that annoyed me in this book was that McCrumb would frequently both "show" you something, and then go ahead and "tell" you as well, just to make sure you got it. Like she couldn't give her readers enough credit for being smart enough to figure out what was going on in the book, or that they would catch an implied meaning. Oh no, she has to then go and have one of the characters explain away the implied meaning, just in case you, the reader, were too stupid to get it the first time. That really bugged me and I had to frequently close the book and roll my eyes. I read another McCrumb book years ago, and I don't recall it being nearly as obnoxious as thing one, but my memory may be bad.

2: I couldn't put it down
This book is a real page turner. No slow parts. Something for everyone. A very entertaining read. I couldn't put it down.

3: Not the best
I read this as a book club selection - and we all wondered why we'd picked it. Not the best storylines to say the least. The one that involves the dolphin is especially ridiculous.

4: Bookclub Bomb
The person who picked this selection for our bookclub nearly got 'egged' when she walked in the door. We all agreed it was a shallow, dull book. Never again for this author!

5: Dolphins are not McCrumb's strong suit!!!
To be perfectly honest I just couldn't get past the thing with the dolphin. I thought it was sick, twisted, and unworthy of a writer of Sharyn McCrumb's caliber. I have read every single one of McCrumb's books, all three series and while If I'd Killed Him... was undeniably funny and had some very valid things to say the dolphin's final scene just ruined it for me. Maybe I'm more puritan than I'd like to think but the only thing I could think of after I finished the book (besides "eeewwww! GROSS!) was that anyone who would devalue humans as much as that character did deserved what happened to her. I'm happy to say that this is the ONLY one of McCrumb's books I've ever been turned off by and I'm glad she seems to be concentrating all her writing energy on her ballad books. They are like jeweled treasures and this book was a piece of plastic compared to them.
