1: Best Novel Ever!
This is the most moving book I have ever read. I'm sure it helps that I am a Hungarian emigree myself, escaping communism with my parents when I was only five years old, but anyone can appreciate the exquisite prose, vivid intercontinental history, and the delving of human character that take the reader on quite an emotional rollercoaster. I cannot believe the lackluster Editorial reviews posted here - I think only a shallow heart couldn't feel a connection to the characters in the Wild Rose that not only make it worth all 837 pages, but still make you want to know more! This book brings Hungarian culture alive in me with overwhelming emotion. The historical accuracy with which Ms. Mortman writes is comendable, the musical underscore perfect, but even more amazing is her portrayal of the intricacies of an emigree's soul. I've read the Wild Rose at least four times now, and have used a box of tissues each time. I plan to make reccomended reading for my two girls when they are old enough, so I'll be buying a few more copies soon...

2: Vadrozsa (Hungarian for Wild Rose)
I was born and raised in Hungary and lived there during WWII and the 1956 revolution. I was inside the Budapest Ghetto and was liberated by the Soviet Army on Jan 18, 1945. I was also at the square where Stalin's statue was dragged down and that event was probably comp[areable to the fall of the Berlin Wall. I personally had no political problems, and was unaware of Recsk, but my cousin did have a friend who was imprisonned there and the place was a reality. Also there was a very famous opera singer who came in from the west toerform and was not allowed out for years, so Katalin's forced stay is a reality. The book is extremely fascinating, gives a good insight to the life in Hungary during WWII and the Soviet occupation. While fiction, it should be read for it's historical insight and accuracy. As one who lived thought tese tines I higghly recommend to everybody. Great book!!!

3: The Wild Rose
This book was suggested to me since my son and I had just returned from a visit to Budapest, where we encountered a very special experience with an older Hungarian man - with tears in his eyes as the violinist played so close to his ear. I so thoroughly enjoyed reading this book of 790 pages that I did not want it to end. It was written so beautifully and with such memorable characters. Her book allowed me to relive our short time in Budapest.

4: something to return to time and time again
Being an avid reader of all types of fiction, especially those pieces that are more than 400 pages, this is a book that I have read so many times that the spine is worn and the pages are dog-eared. "Watching" Katya and Steven and Mat grow up into deep, caring, compassionate people is a rare thing in the main characters of books today. The relationship between Katya and ALL the people in her life is something to envy. Everyone is so passionate about what they believe in and how they feel. It's amazing to watch them interact. I truly recommend this to anyone who likes a well earned ending with lots of character and personality struggle.

5: Best Ever
I have read thousands of books and this is my all time favorite of all...I love all Sidney Sheldon , but for some reason I could not put this one down and it was moving and fast so much going on all the time..Not one dead spot in the whole story...I bought 4 of them over the years. Lending out and not getting them back..( I guess friends love it too) So now I have one left and that is MINE!! I will ready it again...Always learn something new when I read it...
