Customer Review:

1: Book depicts a strong mother figure
This book was a favorite of my daughters, now ages 22 and 24, when they were young. I decided to order it to add to our family's permanent collection, much to their current delight. The beautiful illustrations and the story of how a mother uses her ingenuity to save her children have brought back many wonderful memories. The story need not be frightening to very young children with the right telling by the reader, and older children will enjoy it immensely.

2: Scared my five year old niece, she didn't want to finish it
We read it in the bookstore, and ended up not buying it because, as I said, it scared my niece.

The pictures are wonderful, and the storyline is classic, but I do believe it is definitely a book for the older end of the 4-8 crowd instead of the lower end.

My niece was very concerned about the children misbehaving when left alone (including playing with matches), and upset about them being turned into food for the witch's dinner (I should note that pretend cannibalism is all the rage in her household (yes, I know how weird that sounds), but in this book it scared her), and wanted me to stop reading where the witch is mean to the mother and, among other things, the mother pretends to cut her feet off.

The illustrations, I think, didn't help the matter. As suits the material, they're dark illustrations instead of silly ones. (The book "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" by Tony Ross, featuring *the entire village getting eaten*, is one of her favorites, but the illustrations in that book are lighter, almost cartooney).

In a few years she might like it. Right now, I'm marking it three stars - four stars is my rating, and I take a star off because I simply can't read it to my nieces if it scares them.

If you have a sensitive kid, read the book first before buying, and decide if it'll scare them or delight them.

3: One of my favorite books!
I teach kindergarten and this is one of my favorite books to share with my class. I love the pictures and the kids are fascinated by the story. I had the book in paperback, but it has worn out. I now have my old paperback book to check out to the children and my own copy to cherish.

4: Heckedy Peg
Our whole family enjoys this book. Audrey Wood is one of our favorite authors. All of her books are a delight to read. I meant to select 5 stars, and I can't change it now!

5: Heckedy Peg a Family Favorite
My daughters, ages 4 and 2, have requested this book every night since I bought it 3 weeks ago. They even take it down from the bookshelf themselves during the day to look at the beautiful illustrations. The story is wonderfully written, and my daughters love trying to remember who gets turned into what food. A great buy for our family.
