1: Grade A
This book came in within 5 days and was in excellent condition. It was as good as or better than I expected.

2: Fantastic Young Adult Book!!
This book is a great read for ages 12-14, but I would recomend it to anyone. This book deals with family relationships that seem a little odd at first, but by the end, the reader sees that it doesn't matter how different you may be, family is family, and those relationships are important. In this book, the children's grandmother is a little unconventional, but she still loves her grandchildren, even if she has strange ways of showing it. The children in the book learn to accept and appreciate their grandmother for who she is, and they realize that they do enjoy visiting her, even though she does live "A long way from Chicago." I loved this book! It is very funny and fast paced. I think that middle school students would enjoy it.

3: A delighful book of adventures that brought back memories
This book is superb and will bring back memories to all children who spent time with a feisty grandmother. I am one of them. Joey and Mary Alice Dowdel are in their early double digits in years and live in Chicago. Every year they leave the city and spend the summer with their grandmother in a small town. The timeframe is during the depression of the 1930's, so there is little in the way of extra.
Grandma is a hard working woman who takes nothing from anybody. When the local set of brothers lacking a bit in the intelligence area try to break into her house at night and scare an old woman, her solution is to roll a cherry bomb at them, turn on the light and then hold them at gunpoint with a double-barreled shotgun. She then sends Joey to fetch their parents and tells him to hurry before she shoots them.
This and other stories make for a delightful book of adventures, the children work hard, eat hard and learn a lot of lessons about how to tackle life. It is a bit sad in the end as the children grow up and no longer have any interest in spending the summer with grandma. The story ends with Joey on a troop train during World War II that is passing through grandma's town. It is easy to see why this book was a finalist for the national book award.

4: Read A Long Way from Chicago Today!
I just read the book A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck. The book is the forerunner to A Year Down Yonder. This book is about a boy named Joey who, along with his sister, visit their grandmother every summer. This is a very interesting book because each chapter is telling a different story from a different summer.
There are eight chapters and each one is from a different year. My favorite chapter is The Day of Judgment. In this chapter, Grandma Dowdel is asked to bake a pie for the county fair. At first, she doesn't want to, but she eventually is talked into it. The winner of the pie baking contest gets to ride in an air plane. Grandma doesn't win, but some how she gets a plane ride. To find out how Grandma Dowdel gets that ride, and has many other adventures with her grandkids, read A Long Way from Chicago today! Valerie Charter

5: A Long Way From Chicago
This book and it's sequel "A Year Down Yonder" are two of the most delightful books I have read in a long time. It is the story of two children from Chicago who spent time each summer with their grandmother, Grandma Dowdle, in the country. Their adventures are exciting and funny but each teaches a unique principle. I laughed a lot reading this book. Now as I go through my day-to-day life, I quite often think of Grandma Dowdle and the lessons I learned from her. This is a book written for adolescents but as an adult, I loved it.
