Customer Review:

1: very boring.
Didn't really enjoy the first one but it was much better than this one. Story is just plain boring.

2: A Very Poor Read
Unlike many others, while I enjoyed "Wicked," I was not as taken with it, although I appreciated Maguire's general fidelity to Baum's "Land of Oz" and the well-developed plot and sub-plots. "Wicked" was an ambitious and engaging rethinking of a great classic book and film, even if it did spawn a bloated and overdone musical. "Son of a Witch," however, is a dreadful slog.

The story picks up almost exactly where "Wicked" left off, this time revolving around the character of Liir, Ephaba's son, who embarks on a predictable voyage of self-discovery and search for his maybe-sister. This tiresome trope bounces Liir through a series of predictable encounters with many of the cast of characters from "Wicked" who, this time around, are simply boring and stale. Every one of Liir's encounters and adventures is a cliche, and an over-written cliche at that. And, the culminating emphasis on Liir's homosexuality, clearly designed to cement his status as Elphaba's true heir in his "triumphant otherness," is nothing less than trite and jejune. Also, the charming and diverse dialogue of "Wicked" is simply missing here, and all of the characters sound virtually identical, all lost in a kind of sloppy pop-Freudianism with bouquets of hackneyed phallic references so blatant they literally cause eye-rolling. It is a sequel that does the original absolutely no justice, populated by a cast of characters so cardboard it makes one pray for a refreshing rain of falling houses.

This book is, clearly, little more than a phoned-in money-maker for "Wicked" afficianadoes. It is not worth the time and money it takes to wade through its pudding-like prose. If you wish to try "Son of a Witch," I would strongly suggest checking a copy out of the local library and not spending hard earned cash on this broom ride into incoherent disaster.

No recommendation.

3: Good book. Good buy.
The book itself was in very good condition and worth every penny. The story itself is a good read and is a very decent sequel to Wicked. If anything, it may be even better.

4: Great Book
I bought this book for my grandfather, it came fast and in perfect condition. He was extremly pleased!!

5: Review From One Book At A Time
I will admit that I was not an instant fan of Wicked. It took the second reading for me to be fully engaged in it and not completely confused. Maybe that's the case here as well. Nothing about this book felt similar to the first. It was even more confusing. The characters don't feel the same nor does the land of OZ (but then there is no Wizard...). The first half to 2/3 of the book drag on. All the action occurs in the end, and then it's over. I didn't particularly like Liir. He was a wishy-washy character, and never firmly stood his ground on anything. In the end, he seemed to develop some character. But, it was too little too late. I will probably read the latest in the series A Lion Among Men, but only because the library has it.
